Some Soft Drinks May Damage Your DNA*

Sunday, May 27, 2007 5:10:19 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

"A new health scare erupted over soft drinks last night amid evidence they may cause serious cell damage. Research from a British university suggests a common preservative found in drinks such as Fanta and Pepsi Max has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA.

The problem - more usually associated with ageing and alcohol abuse - can eventually lead to cirrhosis of the liver and degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's. ...

Concerns centre on the safety of E211, known as sodium benzoate, a preservative used for decades by the £74bn global carbonated drinks industry. Sodium benzoate derives from benzoic acid. It occurs naturally in berries, but is used in large quantities to prevent mould in soft drinks such as Sprite, Oasis and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces." (Ref)

Arg! This is just.. arg! Especially since my favourite fizzy drink is Cream Soda (contains E211)!!! I suggest you definitely take a look at this article though, anything that "switches off DNA" is no joke. For me .. I guess it's back to (the over-priced, 'all-natural') juices. Nothing like a good Bajan Cherry, Blackberry or Passion Fruit juice!

LOL, I had this strange URGE to comment to this blog. Not sure how it will go as I type, but I know if I keep on typing it will come to me. Soft drink, smoking, too much fat, too little fat, too much calories, too little calories URG! Now these are the reports that make me go ARG! One minute they tell you this is bad, next minute they turn around and tell you it is good. I think it is a sad state I come to when I lean on the comments of researchers who can tell me one minute this is good, then the next it is bad after how many years of happy go lucky consumption (winkie winkie) Repeat after me Diosa, God created all things and after, He said it was good. Once it is natural in the way God intended it to be, it is good for consumption...Lifetime of water, fruits and vegies PLEASE.......P.S The occasional roast pig and fish can pass once I grow it myself....LOL

Lol!! I understand your point though.. but as they say in the aforementioned article "The food industry will say these compounds have been tested and they are complete safe," he said. "By the criteria of modern safety testing, the safety tests were inadequate. Like all things, safety testing moves forward and you can conduct a much more rigorous safety test than you could 50 years ago."

So.. I take it that as they get more information & are able to perform better and more conclusive tests.. they can then make better recommendations about what is "good/bad".

One last point..! I hope you plan on growing those fruits yourself! And I wonder where you'll be getting that water from! It's all PROCESSED!! :)

Soft drinks are crap. So much of this stuff that is supposedly "safe" that they put out there really isn't good for you. That's why, I try to avoid anything with a ridiculously long shelf life (see box juices, sodas etc), and if possible opt for the phd juice without the preservatives. Ideally freshly squeezed fruit juice would be my thing ... but that ain exactly cheap ...

Diosa - lol, amm, what country you intend to see this "spring" and everything these days is linked.. the ground that you grow your produce on may be a ground that was once used for dumping or.. probably the water that feeds the spring contains some type of pollutant etc.

"All natural" I think is a joke really..
