Who said Linux Desktops couldn't be beautiful?*

jasonnurse_Ubuntu1 Ah I remember my short stint using Ubuntu.. definitely the best part of that time was the flexibility I had in customising my desktop and making it as "tricked out" as humanly possible. Actually, to the right you can see a screenshot of what it had looked like (note that I'm actually rotating the desktop - aka switching screens - in the photo)! Nice huh?

Anyway! I just came across this post - 10 Most Beautiful Looking Linux Desktop - that presents some exquisite desktop photos that depict how impressive a well-customised Linux setup can look - Apple, eat your heart out!

Remember folks, Linux distros are generally FREE, and if you have Microsoft Windows installed, you can easily dual boot and switch between OSs in a matter of minutes. Why not have a look?

I know that you put that little piece in there about Appple for me to comment on this blog, but you and I both know that should be Microsoft, and not Apple.

And by the way, the second screenshot is Linux trying to look like Apple :)

The main requirement is a decent video card, not tech savvy imo. Doesn't do diddly squat on my computer ... I really need to upgrade.

Think I may have misinterpreted the first question. Doing a dual boot requires a bit of tech know how, or the ability to use google and follow instructions very closely.

@Mia - If you mean installing Linux and dual booting, I must admit, being tech savvy is pretty important. This is mainly when it comes to filling in the missing gaps in instruction manuals, and also for troubleshooting.

Also, for non-techies, I'd be wary of installing this on your ONLY pc which you need for other, more serious purposes.

I'm sorry that all of a sudden things sound so daunting but the nature of these systems - even though they sometimes intend to be - are not nearly as "plug and play" like Microsoft products. Out of curiosity Mia, do you know anyone who uses Linux?


@Antonio Holder - lol, you know me too well! And yes, the second screenshot is a clear imitation of Apple's setup.


@tech-barbados - Yes, video card.. I did endure some pain in configuring things to get Beryl and Compiz working. Now to think of it, that was a tough time! But, I think getting my screen to flip and rotate like a cube, plus the transparent windows, changing Window themes, screenlets, and other 'cool' features was worth it.
