My pick of Barbados Crop Over 2008 music*

To be honest, I'm not really a Crop Over fan at all, and believe me, that makes me stand out like a sore thumb in Barbados around this season. When it comes to the music, it's really only 2 or 3 songs that I at least would tap my foot to.

This year I must say that I'm filled with mixed feelings. I do admit that there are a few songs I have taken to mainly due to their rhythm, but what some promote is.. shady at best. The ones I refer to specifically are:

Contone - Hard Times (alcoholic?), Pong - Offset (rum?), John Mahameed - The La La Song (not sure what's a "la la"), Stabby - Stabby De Guard (starts funny, but a bit.. radical), Edwin Yearwood - Nah Missing Me, Nard - Socarobics (..), RPB - Wrong Gal (..), John Mahameed - Hold The Brass (still trying to figure this one out).

If you want to hear these songs and judge them for yourself, you can head over to BajanTube or 98.1 The One (requires a .m3u player) websites.

RPB - Wrong Gal is SO MUCH TUNE!!! That and Hold the Brass, BRAXXXXXX !!! TENTS THIS WEEEKEND !!!

Jason my boy, you need to learn to appreciate the social commentary, but alas, I fear most of it would be lost on someone who isn't in the country, and aware of the social and political happenings. This year all the big boys are back in the competition, Gabby, Serenader, John King, RPB, Kid Site.

RPB - Wrong gal... lol, I'm still pondering on my overall opinion on that one. So far, I've made a PRETTY bad call with "texting" so, I'm rather apprehensive now.

Regarding social commentaries, I never liked them much anyways. However, I do think that someone overseas who follows Barbados news could still appreciate a few of the tunes.

Do you know if there's any from Madd this year though?

Actually, Peter Boyce is the head of some board or the other now, and isn't working with Madd this year, so I think there's strife within the group. Haven't heard much from them this season, and all the guys seem to be focused on doing their own thing. KB is running bachanal time, and Peter is dealing with calvacades and that kinda thing thing. The rest of the guys are just caught in the middle i guess.
