UWI and laptops*

Saturday, April 05, 2008 5:45:33 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

http://cavehill.uwi.edu/images/slides/undertree.jpgI was just doing a bit of researching on the Web and for some basic information I took a trip to the UWI Cave Hill web site. On it, I saw the photo on the left, and could not help but wonder if laptops were now a 'standard' at Cave Hill. It's not that I would doubt such a thing, however I do wonder if they are half as prevalent as purported in this photo.

Of course I also do take the point that this photo _may_ have been ... "staged" as arguably all promotional photos are. In this case, especially noting the fact that the laptops all appear to be quite similar!

In my days at UWI though, laptops I think were mainly carried by the rich folks.. ;)

Ummm,

I had a laptop when I was there and I woudn't consider myself anywhere near the rich folks category.

I think back in our day a lot of people had laptops, just the wireless was crappy back then so there was no need to have it out in the open like that. I think they improved the wireless network up there a lot, so that's why you might be seeing them out in their numbers like that now.

:D

OK OK.. To be honest, I added last part about "rich folks" JUST to elicit a response to this post from you. lol

I do like your point about the wireless though. That is really interesting. How does it work though? Do students initially authenticate themselves with their ITS username and password before beginning to surf? Of course it's not a 'free for all' right..

What about the numbers? Do you have any idea about the prevalence of laptops in students? 1 in 10/20/30 maybe?

I think it is free for all though.

I haven't checked since last semester, but when I was there last semester, it was free for all..

And when I pass through there, everyone under the tree seems to have a laptop. so I'm not sure about the numbers but I do see quite a few, at least 5 at a time when I pass.

Yeh, it's a free for all. Laptops are becoming pretty ubiquitous, although for the life of me, I can't figure out why more people don't explore cheaper options. With regards to your point about the laptops being similar, most people tend to go with the standard Dell. What's it like at YOUR uni Jason?
