Would a Prettier Linux Make You Switch?*

Friday, July 25, 2008 10:00:25 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Techie website Lifehacker reports, "Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth (who we interviewed last year) announced that he's out to make Linux a better-looking operating system than Mac OS X—within two years. An ambitious goal! At O'Reilly's OSCON conference this week, Shuttleworth said:

"I think the great task in front of us in the next two years is to lift the experience of the Linux desktop from something stable and usable and not pretty, to something that's art," Shuttleworth said. "Think of the way the iPhone uses a pure software experience, it abstracts away all the hardware," he said. "You can paint anything on the screen because it's all software.""

Full story here..

Even though this is all fine and dandy, I'm slightly confused as Ubuntu can already be 'tricked out' to great proportions with Gnome add-ons (as I did and displayed a little while ago). I guess Mr. Shuttleworth's aim is to make it prettier straight of of the box?

I'm not really into the whole OS battle. I like to have five or six hard drives lying around, and a good few live cds. I think it's funny how people get so passionate about what OS they use at home. If you're talking about something critical, like the OS used for a server, or the desktops at work, then it's something worth debating, but, for home use, I don't get what all the fuss is about.

Dominating the home desktop is just the first step...
