Brazil to host 2014 World cup!!!*

Job well done in wining the right to host one of the world's biggest events! Especially this event, noting how soccer-crazy Brazil is! The photo to the right shows people waving flags at the Christ the redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, after Brazil was officially chosen by FIFA to host in 2014.

If you ever doubt the value of football to Brazil, remember this comment made by Brazilian President Luiz Inacia Lula da Silva on receiving the news of Brazil's success, "Soccer is not only a sport for us," .. "It's more than that: Soccer for us is a passion, a national passion." (Source)!!!

O help us, Lord, to heed Your Word,
Its precepts to obey,
And give us strength to quench the urge
To do things our own way. - Sper

An extra hour in today, BST ends at 1am*

Sunday, October 28, 2007 11:08:01 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

clock05 Well today, in the wee hours of the morning, British Summer Time (BST) ended and I was presented with an extra hour to use as I wish.. So, what did I do with it? SLEEP! :) lol.

Anyway, for those of you who don't know, here's a BBC article with the reason that the clocks go back. And also, for you Bajans reading, now that the clocks have been turned back, please note that the UK is now 4 hours ahead of Barbados instead of 5.

toodles!

More interesting stats.. facebook related*

Sunday, October 28, 2007 8:31:16 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Since I've hit the UK, both in my flat and at university, I've encountered Facebook junkies (users). I've even been somewhat threatened to sign up or run the risk of not being informed of parties and limes and such! So once again, I have had to open up and face the, "To join" or "Not To Join" question.  In my attempt to decide on whether to sign up or not I came across some intriguing facts reports. The following was adapted from this BBC website:

Facebook has gone viral in the last 12 months, with more than 50 million users worldwide and a user base that is growing faster than great rival MySpace. According to Facebook, it adds 200,000 new users each day. [200,000? REALLY NOW?]

US research reveals that Facebook users come from wealthier homes and are more likely to attend college than MySpace users.

According to a report, 233 million hours of work are lost each month in the UK due to staff looking at social networks. [THIS... I believe.]

*sigh.. *Resume FB evaluation*.

Note to self.. and other phd students..*

Friday, October 26, 2007 5:12:57 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

The key to getting a PhD is maybe 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, combined with a liberal sprinkling of reflection...

Yes, to get a PhD you need to be bright, you need ideas and you need to do good research. But more than anything else you need persistence. You need to commit yourself to getting up and doing it again today.   ...

This gift of reflection, noting our actions and learning from them is one of the real characteristics of true intelligence, birds do it, bees do it and yet so often we fail to do it. It's so much easier to avoid reflection, to avoid action - and yet these are the keys to true success, in life, in business, in a PhD. (Source)

Really inspirational stuff.. I suppose one could apply this to other courses and even to life. For me though, I doubt that 10%-90% would do it, God is crucial to my, and one could even say, all of our success.

On the side: Hey Matt and Kat! I figure you're the only two other phd students reading this! So I hope you find it useful!!

Bloggers, is this you?*

Friday, October 26, 2007 4:00:53 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

One thing about researching, especially pondering over books and stats - you can find the most interesting of things! See quote below.

"Blogs have become a part of mainstream online culture. ... Bloggers tend to be male, young, broadband users, Internet veterans, wealthy, and educated." (Laudon & Traver, 2007, p. 408)

Hmm.. let's assess.. me. Male? Tick! Young? Tick! Broadband? Tick! Net Vet? Tick! Wealthy? I wouldn't say so. Educated? Am I? .. HMM! 4/6, not too bad a generalisation at all!

What do YOU think?

Ah.. nature*

Scientists unveil ways of weakening hurricanes*

Wednesday, October 24, 2007 11:19:23 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Rather interesting news item..

LONDON, England, October 22, 2007 - Scientists have come up with a new theory on how to weaken hurricanes and steer them off course.

The theory - tested using only computer simulations so far - is not intended to kill the hurricane but to weaken it slightly, cause it to veer in a different direction, which has potentially legal and social issues.

"The social and legal issues are daunting. If a hurricane were coming towards Miami with the potential to cause damage and kill people, and we diverted it, another town or village hit by it would sue us. They'll say the hurricane is no longer an act of God, but that we caused it," Alamaro said."

Web design and development Talent*

Monday, October 22, 2007 9:19:10 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

In my little time on this planet, I would say that I have met about only two guys who are excellent in the area of web site design and development. I mean, time and time again they blow me away with their ideas and implementations.

The one I'm going to 'big up' in this post is my bud, gingerstan! I'm highlighting him now mainly because he's recently updated his site and I must admit, he's just.. talent. So much talent that I had to post about it! (No he's not paying me.. but if he wants to.. he can feel FREE!) How he implements his portfolio (the flash version especially) and the use of the Google maps, just goes to show how versatile and innovative this bloke really is.

So people, without any further adieu, see usable, valid and aesthetically pleasing Talent.

Gingerstan, if you're reading, great job! To me, it's definitely a step up from the previous site. I'll email you with more detailed comments as soon as I can. :)

Woooahhh.. What a game!*

Thursday, October 18, 2007 11:57:14 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Just to let you know, there are a couple words that it would be wise NOT to use in England or with a Brit today or in the near future. For your benefit and personal safety, I've listed them below..

football, McClaren, England, Russia, Euro, Moscow, qualifier, Steve, 2008, Luis Medina Cantalejo (or just 'referee'), even Mc or Claren are a bit on the risky side..

On the bright side though, you can use, 'go Isreal' and 'go Andora'.. Actually, last night on the radio one of the hosts blatantly stated that her new National team was Israel! She was appalled at the performances of especially Crouch and Rooney.

Feel free to add any other words or terms in the comments section of this post.. It's really all for the safety of our fellow (wo)man. :-)

Weather in.. uk*

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 4:28:13 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Weather forecast today.. Max 13 deg, Min 3. .. If you know me.. you can imagine the blank look on my face right now conveying my disbelief in these .. excellent temperatures.

Anyway, I got some proper meds today so hopefully that bug I've got won't be around for much longer!

For today.. my post is on the name Jason, many of you may not know but there's a good meaning behind it, check it out below, and see the link for the full article.

"English form of the name (Greek Ias{o_}n) borne in classical mythology by a hero, leader of the Argonauts, who sailed to Colchis in search of the Golden Fleece, enduring many hardships and adventures. The sorceress Medea fell in love with him and helped him to obtain the Fleece; they escaped together and should have lived happily ever after. However, ..." (Ref)

What a doosie!

Bearly been two weeks.. and I'm already on the ropes*

Monday, October 15, 2007 5:39:37 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

But alas, it's not the PhD, I've got some type of bug! Could be flu, cold or just a horrid sore throat! Whatever it is, it has me under strict manners. No worries though, hopefully it's nothing some paracetamol and cherry-flavoured lozenges can't tackle.

On the PhD side of things so far I've (1) outlined (with the help of my supervisor) the general areas on which I need to focus; and (2) started doing some background reading on one of these general areas. When I have more time, I'll post more information here about my studies for any of you that have the faintest interest in what I've dedicated 3 years of my life to do.

For now.. it's dark and I'm going home! ta!

Starting a PhD*

Tuesday, October 09, 2007 5:46:40 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

"If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?" Albert Einstein.

For those of you who don't know, I've started a PhD course at the University of Warwick and organising things for that has got me quite busy! But before you think that the work has me soo busy that I won't have time to post, please note that the hindrance is not the work load, it's that I have no Internet at my flat!! So, luxuries such as posting on my blog any time I'd like aren't really.. possible.

Anyway.. soon! Soon things will be sorted! I also hope to have some nice photos up and such.. The University seems pretty nice (and HUGE) and the people are rather helpful and accommodating as well. So.. for now, taa!!

Happy Birthday blog!*

Friday, October 05, 2007 11:43:27 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

One year ago today I joined the Blogosphere. To be completely honest, it has really been a fun experience, and at times - believe it or not - even exciting! I thank you all who read my blog and I look forward to your continued subscription in the future. Especially since I'm scheduled to be in England for some time to come.

Take care! And thanks again. :)

Elements of a research proposal and report*

Wednesday, October 03, 2007 1:49:26 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

"Elements of a research proposal and report

2005 © David S. Walonick, Ph.D.

All research reports use roughly the same format. It doesn't matter whether you've done a customer satisfaction survey, an employee opinion survey, a health care survey, or a marketing research survey. All have the same basic structure and format. The rationale is that readers of research reports (i.e., decision makers, funders, etc.) will know exactly where to find the information they are looking for, regardless of the individual report.

Once you've learned the basic rules for research proposal and report writing, you can apply them to any research discipline. The same rules apply to writing a proposal, a thesis, a dissertation, or any business research report.

The eagle has landed in the sPa.*

Tuesday, October 02, 2007 1:08:40 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

The eagle has landed.. safely.  So far, I guess, so good. Except for that little incident with and on the transport. One thing is for sure though, moving from 27 to 10 is no walk in the park.. but, I'll manage! Apart from those things, the real fun starts tomorrow, or.. well, tonight, in my preparation for tomorrow.

I also suspect that I'll be adding a new category/tag to this blog shortly, but that'll be confirmed at some later date.

I'm off now to see what mischief I can get myself into.. then again, I probably should concentrate first on how I'm going to get 'home'! :s, taa!
